Ever since I started playing tennis as little tike, I would always want to play with the skill and willingness like Rafa Nadal, the Williams sisters, Novak Djokovic, and many others. One thing that these specific players had in their game that made them stand out to me, a one of a kind grunt.
For years, grunting has been synonymous with the game of tennis but in a negative way. Other players from the ATP and WTA, umpires, and tournament chairs have had enough of it and want it to stop. In recent reports, organizations like the ITA and the WTA are trying to come up with rules that would make over the top grunting illegal in the sport. When tennis is televised, people have been tuning in to watch the Grand Slams grunt and laugh as if it was comedy instead of watching them play. This has lead to awkward ratings for Grand Slams on television networks that shower them.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with it. I do not know why people make a big deal over it. Grunting is a release of aggression and other emotions, which shows the hard work and dedication it took them to get to that level. Also there have been studies that improves reflexes and helps the player keep a steady rhythm. In tennis reflexes and having a good rhythm are two important elements when trying to win a match and every sport has those two key things that are key to winning.
So the next time you are sitting down watching tennis and you hear the players grunting, just think about it being helpful to the players.
